THE CHANGE
A new category arrived on 27 August.
UK Government · 26 August 2026
Compliant plug-in solar became legal across Great Britain.
The government says qualifying kits can produce up to 800W and may save some households up to £110 a year. Those are national estimates, not a promise for your home.

Network rules changed alongside product rules.
Ofgem approved a Distribution Code modification for compliant plug-in microgeneration, while noting that consumer protection and in-home electrical safety sit under separate frameworks.

Five checks before one plug.
This checklist summarises official sources; it is not a substitute for product instructions or professional advice.
Check the product
Use only a device listed as compliant for Great Britain. A familiar plug or marketplace listing is not enough.
Check the property
Ask the landlord, freeholder or building manager where required. Planning or listed-building consent may also apply.
Check the position
Do not block shared balconies, windows, walkways or escape routes. Use only the manufacturer’s approved fixings.
Check the connection
Never use an extension lead or adaptor. Any new outdoor socket should be installed by a competent person and meet the stated weather rating.
Tell the network
London Fire Brigade says to inform the local Distribution Network Operator within 28 days after installation.
If you notice burning smells, overheating, buzzing, visible damage or repeated tripping. Move to safety and call 999 for a fire or burning smell.
